Walks around the Wey & Arun Canal
Loxwood Walk 2: Gennets
Bridge Lock (2¾ miles)
This walk of 2¾ miles heads west out of the village along the
towpath up to the site of Gennets Bridge
lock, passing Loxwood Lock, Devil’s Hole Lock and Southland Lock before
returning back to the heart
of the village.
From the Canal Centre, walk west along the towpath passing the Onslow Arms
public house on your left.
Pass under the Loxwood High Street road bridge, which was built in 2008, to
reach Loxwood Lock. The
Wey & Arun Canal Trust built the lock and the horse bridge during 2005 to
2006 as part of the project to
reinstate the canal under the High Street.
Walk along the bridleway towpath for ½ mile to reach Devil’s Hole
Lock (A) which was reopened by the
trust in 2010. Continue walking alongside the canal to reach Southland Lock (B)
which was completely
rebuilt by the Trust between 2011 and 2013. Walk for approximately ½
mile to reach the site of Gennets
Bridge Lock (C).
From here turn right to cross the old canal (on the Sussex Border Path) and
continue for 350 yards to a
“crossroads” (D). Turn right off the Border Path to follow a bridle path for
just under a mile through woodland
and then open land with fields left and right, stay on the track as it swings
left, the buildings of Loxwood
Farm Place ahead of you, to bring you into Loxwood village by the Village
Shop/Post Office (E).
From the shop turn right, crossing to the other side of the road to continue
on down the pavement and
soon reach the Onslow Arms public house and the Canal Centre.
