An image of a Mallard duck taking off from the water on the Wey & Arun Canal has helped secure Amanda Mariner first place in a photographic competition organised by the Wey & Arun Canal Trust (WACT).
The competition with the theme of "Life on the Wey and Arun Canal" attracted more than 150 entries giving judges Malcolm Roberts of Castle Studios, Guildford, and WACT member Peter Flatter a difficult task in selecting a winner.
Nonetheless, Peter and Malcolm were impressed with the composition and quality of Amanda's image. "The image of the duck taking off really captured the essence of the competition's theme and is a stunning photograph," said Malcolm.
Second prize was awarded to Rosie Sugar for her atmospheric black and white photo of swans on the canal, while third prize went to Derek Grieve with an autumnal scene.
The top three images, along with nine others selected from a shortlist of 17, will appear in the 2014 Wey & Arun calendar which will be on sale later this summer.
